With the advances that have been made in web technology, there are now also several word processing programs that you can access directly from the web (they run and can be used right in your browser window) without having to download them, or purchase them. These online document editing programs are fully functional (you can create, edit, format, and save) and even allow for some features that are absent from MS Word (sharing documents, publishing documents via the web, etc). Here are few you can take a look at if you are curious
Google Docs and Spreadsheets - This software also allows you to create spreadsheets similar to MS Excel. There is full compatibility between Word and Excel with this software so that you can convert either into a Google Doc or Spreadsheet. However, use of this program does require that you create a FREE Google account.
Zoho Writer - This software, like Google Docs and Spreadsheets, does require the creation of a FREE account. Also, like the Google software it is fully compatible with Microsoft Word documents. You may also want to check out some of the other web browser software offers by Zoho including Zoho Sheet (like Excel) and Zoho Show (like Powerpoint)
